Redacted v.0.05 is out! New weapons, gadgets, ammo system and more
Heyo! It for sure has been a while, but rest assured! I have been hard at work at [REDACTED]. Yeah, that joke is never going to get old...
Let's get right to it! The major changes are:
- Ammo System. It has been completely reworked. Instead of having different ammo types, each weapon now has its own ammo reserves, so no more sharing ammo between weapons! This implementation makes more sense since it was getting a bit annoying that some weapons shared ammo pools which led to the stronger weapons not getting used that much.
- Ship. This will be the main hub for the player before and after each mission. This space will be where the player chooses the next target location, chooses his gear, and upgrades his arsenal.
- Map Selection. Since I always wanted the player to have a ship and travel to different locations and missions, I have implemented an early version of the Holotable! This 3D showcases the current star system that your ship currently orbits. And you get a piece of information of your destination prior. This might be a good opportunity to give hints on coming enemies or obstacles, to give the player a heads up? I may play around a bit with that.
- Pod. For each mission the player will have to select a destination at the Holotable and then head over to the pod to deploy. I think it makes for a great experience instead of just teleporting to your selected map. As for the pod and ship models, they are very much placeholders and are subject to change in the future.
- New Weapon, Orion. This heavy hitter concentrates magma into a single high powered beam, great for inflicting a lot of damage on single targets. Beware though, while active it becomes difficult to redirect your aim.
- New Gadget, Protector. Gadgets have always been a goal to have in the game, and are activated by pressing [RIGHT CLICK] on the mouse. Gadgets will be powerful tools available during missions to aid you with traversal, combat, and strategizing. The Protector is essentially a shield that nullifies incoming damage. As most things in this game, it is still an early concept and future iterations of the Protector will have a damage cap on how much it can handle before it is destroyed. This will prevent it from making it too op.
- New enemies. I have worked a lot on the AI of the enemies and they all now have behaviour trees! This will make each enemy unique in the way they approach combat, encouraging the player to learn their patterns to figure out the best way to take them out. They are still under development but the final concept is that each enemy type will have a unique roll in combat. For the time being, they all look the same (aside from some colour variations), but I will come around and hopefully make some animated models. This goes for the weapons, ship and pod models as well.
- New Tutorial. The tutorial mission has been reworked and now has a similar layout to how the future missions will look like. This mission will have the core mechanics of the game and will introduce old and new players to how the gameplay is improved and added upon on each iteration of the game.
- Vendor improvements. Each weapon now has a description on how it behaves and what player can expect from it. Future iterations may include clip- and ammo reserve size, fire rate and damage. An inventory menu has also been added, allowing the player to choose what four weapons to bring to the next mission. If the player tries to enter a mission with an empty inventory, the standard Blaster will be assigned.
- Settings. Added a functioning pause menu and settings to configure the resolution and controls. Its boring but much needed, since now the game can be played with lower end specs as well!
- Fixes and improvements:
- Fixed a bug with hit scan weapons that did not hit the target despite the cursor clearly hovering over a target.
- Fixed a bug with health now being reset upon death. Health packs now caps at the player max health, preventing players from getting health above max health.
- Fixed a bug with the player having an empty inventory despite adding weapons to the weapons slots.
- Adjusted the weapon damage and fire rates on all weapons.
